Garbage disposal repair in Evansville, IN

Flip the switch and notice what the disposal does: a hum with no spin, dead silence, water under the sink, or a sink that drains slowly even though the unit runs. Each one points to a different fix, and only some of them call for garbage disposal repair. The rest belong to the drain line past it. Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) names grease as one of the most common causes of local sewer backups, and a disposal can't stop it.

Garbage Disposal Not Working: Which Repair the Hum, Silence, or Leak Points To

A kitchen sink full of water and a disposal that won't grind usually falls into one of four patterns, and the pattern decides the repair:

Close-up of hand using wrench to reset jammed garbage disposal
  • It hums but doesn't spin. Power reaches the motor, and something is holding the grinding plate. That's usually a jam you can often free.
  • It's silent. No hum, no click. That points to a tripped reset, the wall switch, the breaker, or a motor that has quit.
  • It runs, but water drips in the cabinet. A drip at the sink flange or the side drain pipe is often a seal or a loose clamp; water from the bottom of the housing usually means the unit is done.
  • It runs fine, but the sink backs up. The clog is likely in the trap or the line beyond it, not in the disposal.

Keep the switch off on a unit that hums and won't turn. Running a locked motor heats it up and shortens its life, and a five-second try is enough to learn what you need.

Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Working: Freeing a Jam Safely

When the motor hums and the plate is stuck, a fork, bottle cap, or fruit pit is the usual cause. Turn the wall switch off, then unplug the unit under the sink or switch off its breaker if it's hard-wired.

Never put a hand into the grinding chamber, even with the power off. Look down the drain with a flashlight and pull out anything you see with tongs or pliers.

Many units have a small hex socket in the center of the bottom. With the power still off, fit the matching hex key and work it back and forth until it turns a full circle. Restore power, run cold water, and try the switch for a second or two.

If it still hums after that, stop there. A plate that won't turn by hand, or that frees up and jams again within days, usually has worn parts or a motor problem that a key won't fix.

Garbage Disposal Reset Button: Where It Is and When It Won't Help

A disposal that went silent after a jam has often tripped its overload. The garbage disposal reset button is usually a small red or black button on the bottom of the unit; press it until it clicks, then check the breaker if the unit is still dead.

One press fixes a single overload. Two or three trips in a week mean something else, and so does a reset that keeps popping, a breaker that trips the moment the unit starts, or a burnt smell when it runs. Those point to the motor or the wiring, and pressing the button again only adds heat.

Garbage Disposal Leaking From the Bottom: Repair or Replacement

Water under the sink while the disposal runs is when you choose between a disposal repair and a new unit, and where the water shows up first decides it. Lay a paper towel under the disposal, run water, and watch which spot gets wet.

At the top, where the unit meets the sink, it's usually the sink flange seal or a loose mount. At the side outlet, it's the drain gasket or clamp. Both are repairs that keep a working motor in service.

Water from the bottom or the body of the housing means the inside has failed, and no patch will last there. A new unit is the better buy, and the same goes for a cracked case or a motor that has burned out.

A replacement also has to meet code. The 2006 International Plumbing Code that Indiana adopted requires every food-waste grinder to have a cold-water supply, and Indiana adds that the supply must be protected against backflow by an air gap or a backflow preventer. If your dishwasher drains through the disposal, a new unit often ships with a small plug inside the dishwasher inlet that has to be knocked out, and we check the dishwasher supply and drain hookup while we're under the sink.

You can get a free estimate first and see whether the seal, the mount, or the whole unit is the expense before you decide anything.

Garbage Disposal Replacement Won't Fix a Slow Drain

If the disposal spins and grinds but the sink still drains slowly, garbage disposal replacement won't help. The clog sits past the unit, in the trap or the branch line, and that's a job for drain cleaning.

Homeowner noticing slow kitchen drain

Grease is the usual suspect. EWSU names fats, oils, and grease (FOG) as one of the most common causes of sewer backups in Evansville, and a disposal grinds food but does nothing to stop grease from cooling and sticking inside the pipe.

If other drains gurgle or back up too, look farther down the line. EWSU says backups start either in the City's main or in the private sewer service line, and Evansville homeowners own and maintain that private line.

Restaurants carry more rules. Under the plumbing code, a commercial disposer has to drain into a pipe at least 2 inches across and be trapped separately from other fixtures and sink compartments. EWSU also says draining FOG into the sewer violates local ordinances, and its FOG Coordinator handles grease-interceptor questions for food businesses.

A drip from a cracked sink edge or the faucet base is a separate fix, done as a kitchen sink and faucet install. Disposal problems tend to end at the drain beyond the unit, so we treat disposal work as part of our plumbing in Evansville, drain and all.

Common questions

How do you reset a garbage disposal?
Turn the switch off, find the small button on the bottom of the unit, and press it until it clicks. If the unit stays silent, check its breaker. A reset that pops two or three times in a short stretch means the motor or wiring needs a look.
Can I fix a garbage disposal myself?
Some problems, yes. Clearing a jam with tongs and a hex key, pressing the reset, and snugging a loose drain clamp are owner jobs with the power off. A leak from the housing, a burnt smell, or a breaker that keeps tripping is not, and neither is a replacement, since Indiana's plumbing code sets rules for the new unit's cold-water supply and its backflow protection.
Does a new disposal fix a sink that drains slowly?
Usually not. If the disposal grinds normally and the sink still backs up, the clog is in the line past it. EWSU lists grease among the most common causes of backups, and replacing the unit won't clear it.
