Ice maker line in Evansville, IN
Water seeping from behind the refrigerator, a warped floor in front of it, or a new fridge with nothing to connect to usually comes down to the ice maker line: the small supply line, its shutoff valve, and the fittings at each end. A straight swap of the line at a working valve is often an owner job. It becomes plumbing work when there's no valve, the line has to pass through a cabinet or the floor, or you can't trace the leak. The 2006 International Plumbing Code that Indiana adopted expects every appliance's water supply to have an accessible shutoff of its own.

Ice Maker Water Line Leaking? Find the First Wet Spot
When there's water behind the fridge, the first wet spot tells you whether the ice maker water line needs a repair or a full replacement. Turn off the valve, pull the fridge out, dry the line and every fitting, then open the valve and check again after an hour.

A repair is usually enough when the drip is at a single fitting nut that worked loose when the fridge was moved, or at the valve stem while the valve still shuts off fully. Water only at the back of the fridge, with clean, flexible tubing everywhere else, points to that connection.
A new line makes more sense when plastic tubing has yellowed or cracks when bent, when a copper line has been kinked and straightened more than once, when green or white crust shows slow seeping, or when the line is pulled tight with no slack. Two leak points at once usually mean more are coming.
Many kitchen lines tee off the cold-water pipe under the sink, so a drip at that tee can soak the sink cabinet before anyone looks behind the fridge. A wet floor or ceiling stain with no visible source inside a wall or under a floor calls for plumbing leak detection before anyone decides on repair or replacement.
Refrigerator Water Line Shut-Off Valve: Saddle Valve or Quarter-Turn
If the valve behind your fridge clamps onto a pipe instead of being threaded or soldered in, it's a saddle valve, and it's the part most likely to drip, clog, or refuse to close. The 2006 International Plumbing Code that Indiana adopted (section 606.2) requires a shutoff on the water supply to each appliance. Section 606.3 says every shutoff must be accessible.
The code sections checked don't ban saddle valves outright. The practical case against them is that a refrigerator water line shut-off valve has to stop the water fully in a hurry, and a saddle valve's small pierced opening often won't.
Hard water may make that worse. EWSU reported Evansville's 2025 average hardness at 138 ppm (8.1 grains per gallon), which falls in the U.S. Geological Survey's "hard" range. USGS notes the mineral buildup hard water leaves in plumbing, and a tiny valve opening that hasn't been turned in years may be partly blocked for that reason.
A quarter-turn valve placed where you can reach it, often in the sink cabinet or on the wall behind the fridge, gives you a shutoff that closes with one twist.
When the Problem Is the Filter or the Fridge, Not the Ice Maker Line
If ice is slow, small, or hollow and nothing is leaking, find out whether water is reaching the fridge before blaming the ice maker line. A bucket test takes about 10 minutes.

- Turn off the valve and pull the fridge out.
- Disconnect the line at the back of the fridge, with a towel underneath.
- Hold the open end in a bucket and open the valve for a few seconds.
- Shut the valve, reconnect, open it again, and check the fitting with a dry paper towel.
Strong, steady flow means the line and valve are fine, and the trouble is inside the fridge. A filter past its change date, the wrong filter, or one not fully seated can slow water to a trickle; after that, an ice maker switched off, a frozen fill tube, or a warm freezer are appliance repairs, not plumbing.
Weak or sputtering flow at the bucket puts the problem on the plumbing side: a clogged saddle valve, a kinked line behind a cabinet, or low flow at other fixtures too.
Refrigerator Water Line Installation: Valve, Route, and Slack
A new fridge in a spot that never had water, or a kitchen remodel that moved it, calls for refrigerator water line installation. The job usually runs in this order:
- Shut off the water at the main or at the pipe being tapped.
- Choose the tap point, usually the cold-water pipe under the kitchen sink or a pipe in the basement or crawl space below the fridge.
- Install a real shutoff valve that stays accessible, as section 606.3 requires.
- Route the line through the cabinet back, along the wall, or up through the floor, with each hole sized so the line doesn't rub a sharp edge.
- Leave a loose loop behind the fridge so it can roll out without pulling on the fittings.
- Flush into a bucket, connect the fridge, and wipe every joint to make sure it stays dry.

The tap point often sits next to other kitchen supply work. A sink valve that is already failing ties in with a kitchen sink faucet install, and a puddle at the dishwasher side of the cabinet belongs with a dishwasher hookup, not the fridge line.
Commercial ice and soda machines carry an extra requirement. Indiana's plumbing code rates a carbonated beverage machine's backflow preventer as high hazard, and EWSU's development standards require backflow prevention for any proposed facility that plans to use carbonated fountain soft-drink machines. A home fridge line is one of the smaller jobs within plumbing around Evansville; a restaurant's machine, with that requirement attached, is a bigger one.
Common questions
- Do I need a shutoff valve behind my refrigerator?
- You need a shutoff on the fridge's water supply, and it has to be accessible. Section 606.2 of the plumbing code Indiana adopted requires a shutoff on the supply to each appliance, and section 606.3 says you have to be able to reach it, so it can sit behind the fridge or in the sink cabinet as long as you can reach it.
- Are saddle valves against code in Indiana?
- The Indiana plumbing code sections checked don't ban them outright. Code does require every appliance supply to have an accessible shutoff, and a saddle valve that won't close fully doesn't do that job well.
- Can I replace a refrigerator water line myself?
- Often, if a working shutoff is already there and the new line connects straight from the valve to the fridge with slack behind it. After 10 minutes of running water, press a dry paper towel to both fittings before you slide the fridge back. If there's no valve, the line must pass through a cabinet, wall, or floor, or the valve won't close, the job is plumbing work.
