Bathtub repair in Evansville, IN

Most bathtub repair happens without pulling the tub: the crack gets patched, the seal or valve part gets replaced, and the tub goes back into use. The call usually starts with a chip in the finish, a hairline crack, a spout that won't stop dripping, or a water stain on the ceiling downstairs, not with a plan to replace the tub. Taking the tub out is only worth it when the shell flexes, keeps cracking, or sits on a rotted floor.

Cracked Bathtub Repair on Fiberglass and Acrylic Tubs

Cracked bathtub repair starts with one test: stand in the tub and watch the crack. If the hairline stays still, it's a surface repair. If it opens or creaks underfoot, the base beneath the tub isn't doing its job, and a patch will keep failing until that support is fixed.

  • Fiberglass and acrylic. Thin shells crack when the floor of the tub flexes. The crack is ground out, filled, and finished, and the hollow spot under it is filled so the shell stops moving.
  • Porcelain on cast iron or steel. Chips expose the metal. A matched porcelain patch seals it before rust spreads, which matters most around the drain on a steel tub.
  • Soft spots. A floor that gives without a visible crack is an early warning on a fiberglass tub. Catching it before it cracks keeps the repair small.

Evansville has plenty of original tubs to fix. About 49% of the city's housing went up before 1960, per Census data, and the median build year is 1961, so many bathrooms still have heavy cast iron or steel tubs worth saving.

Bathtub Faucet Leaking or the Tub? Bathtub Repair Starts With Timing

Water by a tub is usually the bathtub faucet leaking, a seal letting go, or caulk, and only rarely the shell itself. Timing is the best clue to which one.

  • Drips from the spout all day point to the valve's cartridge or washer. EWSU's tips put a drip every 3 seconds at 86 gallons a month; a tub spout that never stops costs real water.
  • A leak only while the tub drains points to the drain shoe or its gasket under the tub.
  • A leak that appears with the tub filled high, and not otherwise, is the overflow gasket behind the round cover near the rim.
  • A leak only while the shower runs sends you to the spout, the diverter, the shower arm joint, or the caulk line.
  • A leak no matter what, plus a crack that spreads when you stand in it, makes the shell the suspect.

A caulk gap where the tub meets the wall lets shower water run down behind it, and the stain below looks just like a pipe leak. Fresh caulk is sometimes the whole fix.

If the valve can't be rebuilt and needs replacing, the new one matters. Indiana's plumbing code holds tub and shower valves in commercial and multi-unit buildings to pressure-balance or thermostatic designs that top out at 120°F, and a house is safest with the same type. Many tubs have an access panel in a closet behind the wall. Without one, a small, neat opening from the back or from the ceiling below is cheaper than tearing out tile.

Evansville's water can be part of a stiff or dripping valve. The 138 ppm average hardness EWSU reported for 2025 sits in USGS's "hard" band, and the mineral scale left by hard water may wear valve cartridges faster.

When a Bathtub Repair Kit Is Enough

A bathtub repair kit from a hardware store handles problems you can see in full, with no water going anywhere it shouldn't: a small chip with nothing behind it, light scratches, a stopper that sticks, or hair caught just below the stopper. Buy the kit made for the tub's material, whether porcelain, enamel, acrylic, or fiberglass, and expect the color on an older tub to come out close rather than exact.

Kits stop working at three points. A crack that flexes underfoot breaks a patch again, because a patch covers without stiffening. An active leak comes from a joint, seal, or valve that no finish will reach. A clog past the 1½-inch tub trap, the minimum size in Indiana's residential trap table, is beyond a small hand snake, and pushing harder can break old drain parts.

Rentals and hotels add a rule of their own. Indiana treats a building with three or more tenants, or with employees, as a Class 1 structure under the 2012 Indiana Plumbing Code, and there a like-for-like valve or fixture replacement is exempt from a state design release as long as nothing is moved. Local permit rules apply on top of that.

If the same spot fails twice, the cause is deeper than the surface, and a second kit won't do better than the first.

What Drives Bathtub Repair Cost

Bathtub repair cost comes down to what failed and how much it takes to get at it, so two tubs with the same stain below can price very differently.

Homeowner noticing bathtub leak signs
  • Which part failed. A drain or overflow gasket is a short job. A valve that won't shut off takes more parts and time. A cracked shell is the largest of the three.
  • Access. An access panel keeps labor down. No panel means opening, and later closing, a section of wall or ceiling.
  • Valve age. Current valves take off-the-shelf cartridges. An older valve with no matching parts may have to be replaced, and that's plumbing work: the permit from Evansville's Building Commission comes first, and under EMC 15.05.100 the inspector sees the valve before the wall goes back up.
  • Tub material. Cast iron, steel, acrylic, and fiberglass each patch differently.
  • Hidden water damage. A soaked subfloor or loose tile grows the job past the tub.

If the shell can't be saved, replacing the tub in the same opening comes next. A new tub in a different spot calls for a tub installation, and for a household that has stopped taking baths, changing it into a shower is an option. When a slow leak has already ruined the drywall or tile, the fix can grow into a bathroom remodel that handles the wall and the plumbing together.

Common questions

Can a broken bathtub be fixed, or does it always need to be replaced?
Most can be fixed where they sit. Chips, hairline cracks that don't flex, worn drain and overflow gaskets, and dripping spouts are repairable. Replacement is the better call when the tub flexes or sinks underfoot, a crack returns after patching, or the subfloor has gone soft. Since about half of Evansville's homes predate 1960, many original cast iron tubs here are worth repairing.
Is it worth repairing the finish myself, or should I call someone?
Small chips or scratches with no water behind them suit a kit matched to the tub's material. If a patched spot fails again or a crack flexes when you stand on it, the surface is a symptom of a support or leak problem a kit can't fix.
Why does my tub spout keep dripping after I turn it off hard?
If the spout drips with the handle fully closed, a cartridge, washer, or seat inside the valve has worn out. Turning harder wears it faster. At 86 gallons a month from a drip every 3 seconds, by EWSU's count, it's worth replacing the part or, on an old valve, the whole valve.
